Mucormycosis is a rare but serious fungal infection, often associated with uncontrolled diabetes or immunocompromised states.
Risk Factors
– Uncontrolled diabetes.
– Immune suppression (medications or conditions).
– COVID-19 (due to immunosuppressive treatments).
Symptoms
Nasal congestion, facial pain, headache, black lesions on nasal bridge or palate, fever, cough.
Prevention
– Control blood sugar.
– Use sterile medical equipment.
– Use steroids judiciously.
– Practice good hygiene.
Treatment
Antifungal medications (amphotericin B) and surgical removal of infected tissue.
