High Creatinine: Supporting Kidney Function

Creatinine is a normal waste product produced by your muscles. Your healthy kidneys are very efficient at filtering it out of your blood and excreting it in your urine. Therefore, a high blood creatinine level is a key indicator that your kidneys are not filtering properly. It does not cause problems itself, but it signals that kidney function is impaired.

Wellness Strategies

– Stay Hydrated: Dehydration is a common cause of a temporary, mild creatinine increase. Drink 8-10 glasses of water daily.

– Follow a Kidney-Friendly Diet (If prescribed by your doctor): The specific diet depends on your condition, but common guidelines include:

    – Reduce Protein: High protein intake increases creatinine production. Your doctor may advise you to limit red meat, poultry, and fish.

    – Reduce Sodium: To manage blood pressure and fluid balance.

    – Manage Potassium & Phosphorus: Damaged kidneys struggle with these minerals. Your doctor will give you specific lists of foods to limit (e.g., high-potassium foods like bananas, oranges, potatoes).

– Exercise Regularly (but wisely): Intense exercise, especially weightlifting, temporarily increases creatinine as muscles work harder. Moderate, consistent exercise like walking or swimming is better.

– Monitor Blood Pressure and Blood Sugar: High BP and diabetes are the two leading causes of chronic kidney disease. Keeping them under control is the best way to protect your kidneys.

– Avoid Smoking and Limit Alcohol: Both can damage blood vessels, including those in the kidneys.
