Stomach Pain: Common Causes and Home Remedies

“Stomach pain” is a vague term, as the pain could originate from the stomach, small intestine, appendix, large intestine (colon), liver, or pancreas. The specific location, quality (sharp, dull, cramping, burning), and associated symptoms (bloating, nausea, diarrhea) are clues to the cause. Many episodes are short-lived and manageable at home.

Common Causes

– Indigestion (Dyspepsia): A burning or gnawing sensation in the upper middle abdomen.

– Gas & Bloating: Pain that moves around and is relieved by passing gas.

– Constipation: A crampy, lower abdominal pain, often relieved after a bowel movement.

– Food Intolerance/Allergy: Pain, gas, or diarrhea following a specific food (e.g., lactose intolerance).

– Viral Gastroenteritis (Stomach Flu): Cramping, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

– Stress & Anxiety: The gut-brain connection is real; stress can directly cause cramping and altered bowel habits.

Self-Care Tips (for mild, non-emergency pain)

– Eat a Healthy Diet: For a few days, eat a bland, “BRAT” diet (Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, Toast). Add fiber-rich foods slowly. Stay hydrated with clear fluids. Avoid known trigger foods (spicy, greasy, dairy).

– Practice Mindful Eating: Chew your food thoroughly and eat slowly. This is the single best thing you can do for your digestion. Don’t eat while stressed or distracted.

– Stay Active: A gentle 15-20 minute walk after meals can help stimulate digestion and move gas through the system. Stay upright for at least an hour after eating.

– Try Natural Remedies: Ginger (tea, chews, or fresh) is excellent for nausea. Peppermint (tea or enteric-coated capsules) can relax the smooth muscle of the gut, relieving cramping and gas. Chamomile tea is soothing for both the stomach and the mind.

When to See a Doctor

Seek immediate medical attention for: Severe, unrelenting pain (especially if localized to lower right abdomen), fever, bloody vomit or stool, inability to keep down any liquids, unexplained weight loss, or a rigid, tender abdomen.
