Summer Allergies: How to Breathe Easy

Summer should be a time for picnics and hikes, but for millions, it’s a season of sneezing, itchy, watery eyes, and a congested, runny nose. The primary culprits are pollens from grasses (like Timothy and Bermuda), weeds (especially ragweed, which peaks in late summer), and outdoor molds that thrive in warm, humid conditions. These tiny, airborne particles trigger an overreaction from your immune system, which mistakenly identifies them as a threat.

Management Tips

– Monitor Pollen Counts: Check your local weather app for daily pollen counts. When levels are high (usually mid-morning and early evening), try to limit your time outdoors. On high-pollen days, keep car and home windows closed.

– Keep Windows Closed; Use AC: Air conditioning filters the air and reduces humidity, which also helps control mold. Ensure your AC unit has a clean, high-efficiency (HEPA) filter.

– Shower After Being Outdoors: Pollen sticks to your skin, hair, and clothes. A quick shower and change of clothes when you come inside can prevent you from carrying allergens to your bed and furniture.

– Clean Regularly: Vacuum carpets and upholstery with a HEPA-filter vacuum. Dust surfaces with a damp cloth (dry dusting just kicks particles into the air). Wash your bedding weekly in hot water to kill dust mites and remove pollen.

– Use Saline Nasal Rinse: A neti pot or saline rinse bottle is incredibly effective. It physically flushes out trapped pollen and mucus from your nasal passages, providing immediate, drug-free relief.

– Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water helps thin the mucus in your nasal passages, making it easier to drain.

– Consider OTC Medications: Antihistamines (like cetirizine or loratadine) block the histamine reaction. Decongestants (like pseudoephedrine) shrink swollen nasal tissues. Nasal corticosteroid sprays (like fluticasone) are the most effective long-term controller for inflammation.

– Create an Allergy-Proof Bedroom: Use allergen-proof covers for your mattress and pillows. Keep pets out of the bedroom (they track in pollen on their fur). Consider a stand-alone HEPA air purifier to run while you sleep.
